The Simpson Hybrid S is FIA approved. Tests show it to be compatible with 3-point seat belts used by Car Club enthusiasts and High-Performance Driving Experiences. This allows Driving Instructors, Auto Manufacturing Test Engineers, and other cars with 3-point seat belts to have added protection.

The purpose of the Hybrid device is to keep the head from whipping in a crash. This prevents excessive rotational movement without restricting movement of the neck. The head is allowed to move normally but is restricted from movement exceeding normal articulation range of the musculoskeletal system. In any crash the body is decelerated by the harness or seat belt. The head maintains velocity until decelerated by the neck. The device maintains the relative position of the head to the body. It transfers energy to the chest, torso, shoulder, seat belts, and seat as the head is decelerated.
